Uni-Q Driver Array
The R7 speakers feature KEF’s innovative Uni-Q driver array, where the tweeter is placed in the acoustic centre of the midrange cone. This brings the ideal solution of a single point source closer to realisation. The Uni-Q used in the new R Series is the 12th generation, benefitting from years of KEF’s refinement and development. The new Uni-Q driver has been designed using simulation and analysis tools, and reduces colouration by reducing resonance in the gaps between the separate elements, resulting in a purer, clearer sound with improved stereo imaging.
Shadow Flare
In order to minimise harmful cabinet diffraction for high frequencies, the R Series employs Shadow Flare technology, using a carefully profiled transition surface to extend the waveguide effect of the Uni-Q. The line of sight between the tweeter and the cabinet edges is no longer present, creating a shadow area at the places where the potential diffraction is highest. Reducing this diffraction helps to improve fine details, such as the subtle nuances of plucked strings and percussive sounds.
Bass Drivers
The R Series R7 speakers contain two bass drivers, to create a full, rich sound. The bass drivers are constructed using a two part structure, with a shallow concave aluminium skin placed over the paper cone. This creates a better stiffness in the cone, to deliver punch and speed for accurate bass reproduction. A newly designed magnet system produces a more even magnetic field to accurately control the powerful driver.
Cabinet Bracing
The cabinet bracing for the R7s uses constrained layer dampening to provide a solid platform for producing great sound. The damping has internal braces joined by a lossy interface, and is highly effective at dissipating unwanted resonances and vibrations that could alter the sound of the music.
Flexible Port Technology
The port design generates deep and articulate bass from the R7 speakers, by featuring innovative flexible walls. Designed with computational fluid dynamics, the flare and profile of the port is calculated to delay the onset of turbulence, while longitudinal resonances that may colour the midrange frequencies are prevented by the flexible walls of the bass port.
