Most homes still default to a TV, even though a projector can put up a screen several times the size for similar money. 

Ask someone why they haven't gone for a projector and you'll usually hear the same complaints: the picture looks washed out, the colours aren't as rich, the picture quality isn’t good or it only really works in the dark. 

Look closely at those complaints and they all trace back to one thing: ambient light.

Ambient light is any light hitting the screen that isn't coming from the projector lens. Daylight through a window, a ceiling spotlight, a wall sconce, even light bouncing off a glass coffee table all count. The problem is that none of it needs to be particularly bright to cause problems. 

A projected image is far more sensitive to stray light than a TV panel is, because a TV emits its own light directly at you while a projector is throwing light onto a surface that any other light source can also land on and interfere with.

Effect of Ambient Light on Picture Quality

The biggest impact of ambient light is on contrast. Once ambient light enters the picture (literally), black areas turn grey instead of staying black. This is the most obvious effect and the one that even a small amount of stray light will cause. So in a dark scene, shadow details are smudged. Textures disappear and you're left looking at one flat dark mass with shapes moving inside it rather than anything with depth.

This matters more for some content than others. 

Movies are colour graded for a dark cinema, so a lot of their intended effect depends on shadow detail that ambient light erases. Since a cricket match is recorded in a floodlit stadium, it already has plenty of light. Hence ambient light from the room affects it far less. The effect on video games is somewhere in the middle. The picture quality of a dark-ish map in Call of Duty is closer to how ambient light affects the movie and most gamers notice the lack in contrast almost immediately.

Colour volume, which is how colour and darkness interact, is closely tied to contrast. Ambient light can reduce perceived colour saturation and separation, particularly in darker areas of the image. The dark colours and shadow detail get squashed together and lose separation. HDR content is hit hardest by this, since HDR is built specifically around deep shadows and bright highlights and ambient light destroys exactly that range first.

Brightness suffers too, despite the projector putting out enough light. Ambient light competes with the projector's light, reducing perceived image brightness and making the picture appear less vivid. 

There's also a factor that has nothing to do with the projector: how your eyes adjust. Your eyes respond to how bright the room is, not just the screen. In a dark room your eyes open up and pick up more shadow detail. In a lit room your eyes stay adjusted to the room, so that same detail becomes too dark to register. This is a big part of why a picture seems to get worse the longer you sit in a lit room.

Sharpness or Perceived image clarity can also suffer. Reduced contrast can make fine details such as fabric, hair and leaves harder to distinguish, even though the projector's actual resolution remains unchanged.

Colour richness is affected because ambient light mixes with the projected colours and fades them out.

What you can actually do about it

Fixing ambient light has several layers. You generally need to stack a few of them for a radical change.

The first change and the one with the biggest impact is investing in a good ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen. An ALR screen is designed to direct the projector's light towards the viewing area while absorbing or redirecting ambient light arriving from different angles. Its effectiveness depends on the screen technology and the direction of the ambient light. A properly matched ALR screen can significantly improve perceived contrast by reducing the impact of ambient light on the projected image.

Another more obvious step is to block light sources directly. It is the cheapest and often most effective fix for daytime viewing. Blackout curtains or blinds on any window in the room and turning off or dimming any light that falls in the projector's throw path or hits the screen. No ambient light, no problem.

The colour of your walls and ceiling also matters. If they are light in colour, they bounce ambient light around the room and back onto the screen. Dark, low-reflective paint helps cut that secondary bounce. If you have a dedicated home cinema room, you can paint your walls and ceilings matte black to kill reflected light almost entirely.

Projector placement can make a difference as well. Position the projector and screen so unavoidable light sources hit the screen at as oblique an angle as possible. Since ALR screens are angle selective, they perform very differently depending on where stray light is coming from relative to the projector.
