Every time we talk to a client, they ask us the same question:
“We have a small living room. Is it possible to fit a 100-inch screen in there?”
A few years back, our answer would have been a clear ‘no’ to that question. Old long-throw projectors used to take up a lot of space. You needed a solid ten or twelve feet of clear distance between the glass and the wall just to hit a 100-inch picture, which meant most Indian living rooms were not big enough for it.
But thankfully, there have been significant changes that make it possible today.
Short-throw and Ultra Short Throw (UST) units have completely changed what’s possible in small rooms. A UST model can produce a 100-inch image from a position close to the screen, while a short-throw model can achieve the same size from only a few feet away.
Room size still matters, but it's no longer the main deciding factor. Two rooms with identical dimensions can end up with completely different installs: one where the projector sits exactly where it needs to and one where it's firing straight through a ceiling fan or the sofa leaves no clean spot for a mount or there's no route to run the cables. A 100-inch screen might fit easily on the wall, whether the projector, the seating and everything in between works together is a separate question.
The Throw Ratio Math (Do This First)
Throw ratio helps us find out how far a projector’s lens needs to be from the screen. What you actually need to figure out is where the glass lens sits relative to your seating, fans and doorways or windows and make sure there are no obstructions.
Throw Distance is the product of image width and throw ratio (throw distance=image width x throw ratio)

If we calculate that first (before getting into brightness, contrast or other specifications), we can rule out a projector immediately if there simply isn't enough room to place it.

UST Projectors: The Space You Don’t See
Since UST projectors don’t need as much space, they seem like an easy win. Plus, there’s no hassle of plugging in HDMI cables and you can avoid running wires through your ceiling.
The space a UST projector needs depends on several factors: screen size, the specific projector model, throw ratio, mounting method and the installation surface. Larger screens push the projector further from the wall or screen and the unit's physical dimensions along with its ventilation needs dictate how much clearance is required around it. Where it is installed also plays a role. For example, a projector on a cabinet or credenza takes up floor or furniture space, whereas wall mounting cuts requires less space. Cable routing, maintenance access and clearance around air vents all factor into planning the installation.
While the projector lens might only sit 17 inches off the wall, the actual metal chassis of the projector adds another 15 to 20 inches of depth. If we factor in an inch or two behind the unit so you aren't severely bending your power cords and 8K HDMI leads against the wall, that "space-saving" setup requires a media console that sticks out almost 30 inches into your room.
In a small space, losing two and a half feet of room depth just for furniture is a serious compromise you need to plan for.
Another factor to keep in mind is the screen issue. UST light shoots upward at an insanely steep, acute angle. If you try running a UST against a cheap pull-down screen, or worse, a bare painted wall, every tiny wrinkle or wave in the material will cast huge, ugly shadows across your image. A UST needs a very flat surface and the best result often comes from an Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) screen.
And ALR screen works well even if your room has considerable daytime light from a side window. ALR materials use micro-grooves that trap overhead light while reflecting the projector's upward beam directly to your eyes. Without an ALR screen, daytime viewing could be a not be as satisfactory, or sometimes, even a nightmare, depending on how much light your room gets.
So these days, if a client walks in and asks, “I have an 11 by 10 feet room. Will a 100-inch screen fit in there?” the correct answer is: an 11 × 10 feet room can potentially accommodate a 100-inch setup, particularly with UST, but wall width, seating and furniture layout still need checking.
